Mansion Living Helps John Edwards Understand Poverty... Somehow

A bird's-eye view of John Edwards' sprawling 28,000 square foot home in North Carolina where trees once grew and wildlife once flourished.

While we here at Citizens, Not Subjects don't have any ethical problems, per se, with reaping the financial rewards offered us through Capitalism, we can't help but choke once in a while on the crap shoved down our collective throats (if you'll excuse the disgusting metaphor) by our Representatives in Congress.  Imagine for a moment that you plan to, over the next two years, jet around the country lecturing the electorate on the scourge of poverty.  Also imagine that you are going not just to chastise the rich, (of which you are a part), but are also determine to win over the affections of the poor.

As part of your plan, do you suppose you'd build a house that's 80% the size of a football field right before you embark on said trip? That's what John Edwards did.  To most people, that would seem at least a tad hypocritical.  To others, just bad PR.  To John Edwards, this is poses no conflict whatsoever.  This should be worrisome to those of you who support him.  Though I've never heard him asked directly if he sees a conflict with the house, he has been asked directly about why he chose to work for a Hedge Fund company in between the '04 and '08 Presidential campaigns.  He reasoned that he did this to help him understand poor people better.  Huh?

In addition to the 600 sq foot master bedroom, this wealthy capitalist's dream home boasts an indoor recreation center that has: a basketball court, a squash court, two stages, a bedroom, kitchen, bathrooms, swimming pool, a four-story tower, and a room called "John's Lounge" which I can't help but imagine is lined with silk smoking jackets and lots of Cuban cigars.  Curiously, the trees have been carved out in a pattern reminicsent of a foot -- in a size that indicates what the Edwards' huge carbon footprint will be like from the day they move in.

During a busy day on the Senate floor, the ever gracious Hillary Clinton still found time to answer the questions of some fellow Representatives.  Here, we see her answering the question, "Can you approximate the face you made when the Lewinsky story broke?"

Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, this house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can provide. Only 4,000 square feet is size, this 4 bedroom is nestled on arid high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F) heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system.

Look over the descriptions of the following two houses and see if you can tell which belongs to a real Capitalist Pig.

Name That Capitalist Pig

The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2,400.00 per month -- that's than 20 times the amount of energy consumed by the average American family.

House #2
